TechWomen is an Initiative of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which empowers, connects and supports the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) from Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East by providing them the access and opportunity needed to advance their careers, pursue their dreams, and inspire women and girls in their communities.
Through mentorship and exchange, TechWomen strengthens participants’ professional capacity, increases mutual understanding between key networks of professionals, and expands girls’ interest in STEM careers by exposing them to female role models.
During the five-week program, participants engage in project-based mentorships at leading companies in the San Francisco Bay Area or Chicago, participate in professional development workshops and networking events, and travel to Washington, DC. for targeted meetings and special events to conclude the program.

Karachi, November 21, 2024 Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) successfully hosted an awareness session titled "International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Programming Competition Training" at Synate Hall. The session was specifically designed for students enrolled in the computing disciplines under the Faculty of IT.
The training was conducted by the esteemed Dr. Muhammad Rafi, PhD, who provided valuable insights and strategies for excelling in the ICPC. The session was organized by the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) in collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology and was moderated by Mr. Syed Muhammad Belal Qadri.
The event commenced with a warm welcome note from Dr. Mohammad Afzal Chajro, Manager ORIC, and concluded with insightful remarks from Dr. Mansoor Ahmed Khuhro, Director ORIC. At the end of the session, a souvenir was presented to Dr. Rafi by Dr. Khuhro as a token of appreciation.
"The ICPC is renowned as the oldest, largest, and most prestigious programming contest in the world, fostering collaboration, creativity, and innovation among students globally," said Dr. Khuhro. "SMIU's commitment to preparing its students for such esteemed competitions is evident through initiatives like this training session. Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization, in collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology, is organizing a training workshop for ICPC 2024 programming competition. "04 faculty members from Sindh Madressatul Islam University attended a comprehensive workshop on "How to Secure Funding for a Research Project" on November 16, 2024. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Business Management (IoBM)and was conducted by renowned expert Dr. M. Raza Shah. The workshop further equipped faculty members with essential skills to secure funding for research projects, and included topics such as:
1. Identifying potential funding sources"The Ethical Institutional Review Board (EIRB) meeting at SMI University, Karachi, was held on October 17, 2024, at 3:00 PM in Dr. Ibrahim Mulla Lab. The primary agenda was to review and discuss the SRSP research project proposals submitted by faculty members. This meeting aimed to ensure that all proposed research projects adhere to ethical standards and institutional guidelines.
The event is being held in collaboration with Entrepreneurs Den, and shall be attended by many reputable Business and Social Sector personalities. The event shall be held on 26th September 2024 from 12:00 noon onwards, at Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto Auditorium of the university.
SMIU signed MoU ceremony With LEVERIFY LLC
The Sindh Madressatul Islam University and LEVERIFY LLC signed MoU ceremony held at the conference room No.#2 on Thursday 8th September 2022. Dr. Asif Ali Wagan, Director DSA, SMIU and Mr. Zaka ul Mustafa, Director, LEVERIFY LLC signed the MoU. Both the organizations are agreed to promote Industry-Academia linkages and encourage the students community to enhance their skills and knowledge. Dr. Aamir Iqbal Umrani Director ORIC, Dr. Muhammad Afzal Chhajro and Mr. Kamil Lakho from SMIU also attended the MoU ceremony.
MOU signing ceremony with Mindstorm Studios
The Sindh Madressatul Islam University and the Mindstorm Studios signed MoU on Friday at a ceremony held at the Board Room of I.T. Tower, SMIU. Dr. Aamir Iqbal Umrani, Director ORIC, SMIU and Mr. Yasser Awan, Director, Mindstorm Studios signed the MoU. Both the organizations agreed to promote Industry-Academia linkages and encourage game development talent in Pakistan. Dr. Abdul Hafeez Khan, Adviser to Vice Chancellor SMIU on Academic Affairs, Dr. Aftab Ahmed Shaikh, Dean Faculty of I.T, Ms. Saima Sipy Nagaraj, Lecturer Department of Software Engineering, SMIU and Ms. Fareeha Akhtar, Manager Operations at Mindstorm Studios also attended the ceremony.

Karachi: An alumni of Sindh Madressatul Islam Dr Ibrahim Mula residing in USA currently provided SMIU with a funding of around 9 million for the construction of a high performance computing laboratory. The funding came after his visit to SMIU and a meeting with Director ORIC Dr Aamir Iqbal Umrani a few months ago. Dr Mula consented to support the university and agreed to the construction of a laboratory. The funding came through and the laboratory was constructed and was inaugurated on 2nd August 2022 by the man himself. He felt extremely happy to donate for his alma mater. On this occasion, Worthy Vice Chancellor SMIU Dr Mujeeb ud Din Sehrai Memon was also there along with Director ORIC, Deans and other academic and administrative staff. He appreciated the efforts of Dr Aamir and expressed that the laboratory will help the research students (those enrolled in MS and PhD programs especially) of SMIU a great deal. Dr Aamir Iqbal, Director ORIC while talking to audience said that the Dr Ibrahim Mula High Performance Computing Lab is equipped with advanced operating systems, printers, scanners, infrastructure etcetera. He said that the lab is going to make a significant impact on the research work of graduate and postgraduate students.
Sindh Government is arranging very healthy and peaceful initiative City Marathon" to encourage healthy and peaceful life and build harmony among citizens . The Marathon begins on 13th February 2022 at Moin Khan Academy ​DHA Sports Club, Karachi .
Sindh Madressatul Islam university, in collaboration with Karachi Commissioner Office is also supporting this initiative of Sindh Government. The Department of Office of Research Innovation & Commercialization is liaising with internal departments to support this cause.

The Directorate of ORIC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with C -Lab, providing 40% discounts for the health tests to all SMIU staff members and students upon the presence of the Employee Cards or Student Cards . The MoU was signed by Director ORIC Dr. Aamir Iqbal Umrani and Mr. Muhammad Ovais, General Manager, C-Lab Diagnostic PVt. Limited.
Director ORIC Dr. Aamir Iqbal Umrani has directed to ensure best medical facilities to all the employees of SMIU and their families.
Following facilities will provide by C-Lab Diagnostic PVt. Limited and the key points of the said MoU are as under;
1. Provide facility for the health tests and provide discount to SMIU employees / Family Members 40% discount on all special & Routine Test.
2. Provide Discount on Covid related tests (Rs 4000/- on COVID- 19 RT PCR.
3. Give Rs 2000/- on COVID Antibody igG/IgM Test on cash rates.
4. Provide Home Collection facility for blood test.
5. Provide the health tests services to all staff members and students upon the presence of the Employee Cards or Student Cards. (Valid ID cards).
6. Only Immediate family can also avail discounts.

A delegation of Dua Foundation comprising of Chairperson Aamir Khan and the General Secretary Dr Faiyaz Alam called on the faculty members of Department of Environmental Sciences and the Directorate of ORIC SMIU to mediate a memorandum of understanding. It was initially decided that the main campus and Malir campus of Sindh Madressatul Islam University Karachi will be turned into green campuses for which Dua Foundation will provide saplings of various rare, valuable, and indigenous species of trees and plants.
An additional idea for MoU was floated from the faculty of Environmental Sciences that the Dua Foundation should help SMIU in creating a wetland for the wastewater treatment so that the valuable water could be preserved for sustainable environment. These ideas will be deliberated and thoroughly discussed in the upcoming round of talks between the two parties
