Guest Lectures * Semantics: Meaning of Meanings

Department of English in collaboration with Directorate of ORIC SMIU organized a hybrid webinar for the students of the department under the title "Semantics: Meaning of Meanings". The resource person for the session was Mr Waqar Ali Bukhari who is a lecturer of Linguistics at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro and who is pursuing his PhD studies at University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. The session was moderated by Syeda Kiran Shirazi, lecturer DOE. The session was followed by a very interactive question and answer session. * Guest Speaker Session

Department of Environmental Sciences organized a guest speaker session with the collaboration of the Directorate ORIC SMIU on “Indus Delta: Environmental and socioeconomic issues and solutions” at SMI University, on Friday 31st December 2021 at Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto Auditorium of University. Guest speaker Mr. Nasir Ali Panhwar who is an environment and climate expert explained the importance of the Indus Delta. Guest of honor, Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr. Mujeebuddin Sahrai Memon also shared his thoughts. The Dean Faculty of Science Dr. Syed Asif Ali, Director ORIC Dr. Aamir Iqbal, Manager ORIC Dr. Muhammad Afzal, HoD of Environmental Science, Dr. Imran Ali, Abdul Majeed Pirzada, faculty and students from different departments were present at the session.


* Guest Speaker Session On Web Design and Development

Department of Software Engineering in collaboration with ORIC SMIU organized a one-day workshop for faculty members and students.
The session was held on Wednesday 29th December, 2021 at 11:00 am at Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto Auditorium, SMIU. Mr. Muhammad Ameen Chhajro, Lecturer & Coordinator Department Software Engineering gave the welcome note. The renowned trainer and, Software Engineer and Team Lead at Habib Bank Limted Head Office   Mr. Waris Sarwar conducted the session as the resource person. Mr Sarwar shared his industrial experience, along with ideas pertaining to latest technologies, market demand, skills required, what students should learn during bachelor programs, internship opportunities and more. Students asked questions related to career opportunities and other issues and at the end of the session. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to the organizers of the event.'


* Guest Session on Newspaper Design and Layout

A guest lecture was arranged on “Newspaper Design and Layout” on 18th April, 2018 by Ms. Qurrat-u-lain Rasheed, Lecturer department of Media and Communication Studies, for students of 5th semester having Journalism as elective in Print Lab.
Mr. Tauseef Razi Malick, Sub Editor at Dawn newspaper delivered the lecture. He has vast experience of Print Journalism and has worked for Business Recorder, Express Tribune and Dawn newspaper as Sub Editor.
The objective of this session was to provide students with practical knowledge of newspaper layout design. Principles and basic techniques of newspaper design were also discussed. The session proved to be an informative and interactive one for the students.


* Speaker session on Modern tools and techniques for Software Development

A speaker lecture on “Modern tools and techniques for Software Development” was organized by Department of Computer Science on March 15, 2018 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Quaid-e-Azam Conference Hall, Talpur House. A highly skilled professional from software development industry, Mr. Waris Ali, delivered lecture to a class of 35 students. He informed students regarding recent technologies used in software development. He also highlighted industry demand in the subject area and guided students regarding technical skills required in software industry.

The objectives of the lecture were:
  • To provide information about latest software development tools being used in industry
  • To create awareness among students about future challenges and industry demands of software development
  • To get students familiarized with various career paths in the subject area

* Speaker Session on Telecom Infrastructure Management

A guest lecture on the topic of “Telecom Infrastructure Management” was organized by Department of Computer Science on March 14, 2018 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Conference Hall, Talpur House. A well versed telecommunication industry professional, Mr. Obaid ur Rehman Khan delivered the lecture to 25 MS (Computer Science) students. Guest speaker elaborated modern trends in the data communication and telecom industry and familiarized students with next-generation networks.

The objectives of the session were:
  • To provide firsthand knowledge about the next-generation data networks including data center technology, cloud computing, Internet of Thing (IoT) and Software Defined Networks (SDN)
  • To familiarize graduate level students about data network certification tracks
  • To guide students about current and future job opportunities available in the subject area

* IT Industry Professional Delivers Lecture on Current Trends of DBMS and Oracle

A guest speaker session on the topic of “Current Trends of DBMS and Oracle” was organized by Department of Computer Science on 13th March, 2018 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Quaid-e-Azam Conference Hall, Talpur House SMI University, Karachi. A highly skilled professional from I.T industry. Mr. Saleem Shahzad delivers lecture to a class of 56 students. The speaker shared his industry experience and engaged students through an interactive session and also discussed recent trends in the area of DBMS (Database Management Systems) and RDBMS (Relational Database Management Systems).

The objectives of the session were:
  • To make students sentient about the latest trends in DBMS, RDBMS compared with Oracle Databases
  • To guide students about the importance of database and its market demand

* Informative Lecture on Project Management & Software Quality Assurance

A guest speaker session on the topic of “Project Management & Software Quality Assurance” was organized by Department of Computer Science on March 12, 2018 from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm at Conference Hall, Talpur House. Ms. Sehrish Hasan, Project Manager from VeriPark Software Solutions delivered the lecture to a class of 35 students of 4th year. The Speaker shared her industry experience regarding project management and software testing techniques.

As per departmental Action Plans/Activities, a guest speaker session on the topic of “Agile Development” was organized by Department of Computer Science on March 12, 2018 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Room 103, Talpur House. A seasoned professional from software industry, Mr. Muhammad Omer Khan delivered the lecture to a class of 35 students of 2nd year. The Speaker shared his industry experience regarding Agile Methodology. He also guided students regarding different career paths and the technical requirements of different IT professions.

The objectives of this Guest Speaker Lecture were:

* Speaker session on DBMS Backup and Recovery

A guest speaker session on “DBMS BACKUP AND RECOVERY” was organized by Department of Computer Science on 6th March, 2018 from 09:00 am to 10:30 am at Quaid-E Azam Conference Hall, Talpur House. The guest speaker, Mr. Jabir Salam, delivered lecture to 3rd year students. 50 students attended the session along-with some faculty members. The speaker shared his industry experience regarding database backup and recovery techniques and its related domains and also delivered in-depth knowledge about the new trends of DBMS.

A guest lecture on “Contemporary Tools and Techniques for Managing Software Development Project” was organized by Department of Computer Science on 1st March, 2018 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm at Quaid-e-Azam Conference Hall, Talpur House. A seasoned professional from software industry, Mr. Muhammad Abdul Haseeb, delivered the lecture to a class of 30 students of 3rd year. The Speaker shared his industry experience regarding importance of Project Management discipline in Software Development and shared his knowledge about the latest trends in Project Management and IT governance.

A guest speaker session on “Object Modelling in Python and Real Time Software Optimization” was organized by Department of Computer Science on 5th March 2018 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Quaid-E-Azam Conference Hall, Talpur House. 45 students of 2nd year attended the session along with faculty members. The guest speaker, Mr. Muhammad Omer Khan, informed students about latest advancement in software industry and its related domains specially in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

The objectives of the session were:

  • To update students about what type of opportunities are available in industry

A speaker lecture on “Emerging Network Technologies & Domains” was organized by Department of Computer Science on 6th March 2018 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm at Quaid-e-Azam Conference Hall, Talpur House. 40 students of 2nd year attended the session along with some faculty members. The speaker, Mr. Mubashir Siddique, Head of Corporate Solutions Designing & Digital Services shared his industry experience regarding emerging Datacom networks and its related domains and shared knowledge about the new trends of network technologies which are going to be mature in near future.

* Lecture on Relationship of ICT System in Business

A guest speaker session on “Relationship of ICT System in Business” was organized by Department of Computer Science on March 2, 2018 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Quaid-e-Azam Conference Hall, Talpur House. A seasoned professional Mr. Muhammad Ashfaq, Senior Manager (Archives) at Geo TV, delivered the lecture to a class of 30 students of 3rd year. The speaker shared his industry experience regarding importance of ICT systems in business context and informed about the latest trends of electronic archives.

The objectives of the lecture were:
  • To provide business perspective on the importance of ICT systems
  • To inform students about the latest tools and techniques used in Electronic Archival

Department of Computer Science conducted a guest lecture on "Applications of Quaternion in Attitude Estimation and Control" on March 01st, 2018.

The following key points and objectives were discussed in the guest lecture:
  • Basic idea about Vector Operations.
  • Importance of application of Mathematical Modelling in Satellite Attitude Determination.
  • Quaternions and its usage in solving problems in everyday life.
  • Brief discussion about the Coordinate systems.

  • The important use of Frame of References (inertial frame as well as non-inertial frame of reference)

* Media Studies Department Celebrates World Radio Day

A guest speaker session on World Radio Day was organized by Ms. Ifrah Imam at the department of Media and Communication Studies on 27th February, 2018. Mr. Rizwan Zaidi, a renowned Radio producer at FM 106 conducted the session. He is also serving as the executive member of Debate Council of Pakistan and producer of ARY Entertainment Channel.
The objective of this awareness session was to inculcate the knowledge and importance of radio as an information and entertainment medium. Students enjoyed listening to the resource person and it turned out to be an interactive session. Students of 5th and 6th semesters attended the session.
Dr. Yasmeen Sultana, in-charge chairperson of department of Media and Communication Studies presented the certificate to the guest speaker along with the photo session in the end.

As per departmental Action Plans, a guest speaker lecture on the topic, ”Importance of Software Quality Assurance in Software Development” was organized by Department of Computer Science on 23rd February 2018 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, at Quaid-E Azam Conference Hall, Talpur House Sindh Madressatul Islam University. The speaker delivered lecture to 3rd year students and 31 students attended the session along with some faculty members. The speaker shared his industrial knowledge and highlighted the most significant software quality assurance trends being followed in the industry. Moreover, he enlightened that, how fresh graduates can find job in the market by having prominent skills in the subject area.

* Media Studies department arranges session on Investigative Reporting

A session on" Investigative Reporting" with Mr. Saqib Sagheer, a renowned Crime/Investigative reporter from Daily Jang was held on February 13, 2018 from 12:00 pm to 1: 30 pm in the Print Media Lab of Media and Communication Studies Department. The objective was to create awareness regarding investigative journalism in students and to make them think critically about their surroundings and environment.
Mr. Saqib is a senior crime and investigative reporter, member of IRE (Investigative Reporters & Editors), as well as a senior Vice president of KUJ (Karachi Union of Journalists). He discussed the basic techniques of gathering information and data from the officials.
He also taught the students on how to write a report based on gathered information and data. Different techniques used in investigative journalism were discussed. Question/Answer session was held after the lecture. Students from 7th and 8th semester attended the session. Dr. Yasmeen Sultana, Chairperson of Media and Communication Studies department presented the certificate to the guest along with the photo session while concluding the session.
